HRRC 2007 Report

HISTORIC RESEARCH AND RESOURCE COMMITTEE 2007

The objective of this committee is to provide researchers with expanding collection acquisitions and easy access to the collections.  This has been accomplished by dedicated volunteers.

So far this year, seventeen collections/donations have been received.  The collection acquisitions are the success of the Miamisburg Historical Society’s Research Room which is located in the Market Square Building.  The Research Room is open to the public Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.  This is made possible by dedicated volunteers.

The Miamisburg Historical Society’s Curator, Joseph Steffen, has been a tremendous support to the Historic Research and Resource Committee and the Society in preserving the history of Miamisburg for the future.  Thanks Joe!

Some acquisitions so far this year include:  Kauffman Buggy Works booklet, Certificate of Register Land Office for Jacob Kercher’s land, 1920 Miamisburg High School Class photo, photo of E. A. Deeds and Orville Wright, Acme Boat Company pictures on CD, 1885/1886 Miamisburg High School Commencement Program, Transcribed oral history by Bernice Donahue, Wooden Keg from Miamisburg’s Dayton Shore Grip & Shore Co., Miamisburg High School Mirus yearbooks, History of the Miamisburg Mound State Memorial, Pansing and Eck family’s artifacts/photographs/letters/and genealogy, Grove & Weber Company BASA hammer, Brough-Getts Funeral Home Records organized into books available for public viewing, a shotgun shell loading device, an ‘old’ hay bale hook, pictures of Miamisburg from 1980 to 2003 organized in three scrapbooks, Hill Grove (Hillgrove) Cemetery Records, Uhrich and Staley Daily Journals in binders for the public to read, and photo of Deutsche Apothecary (A.L. Silberman’s Pharmacy).

Plans are in the ‘works’ for a “Ghost Steps” event on Sunday, October 14th, 2007.

Our participation at the 2007 Annual Spring Fling, Booth #47 near the “oldest” oak tree in Library Park gave our volunteers the opportunity to answer questions about Miamisburg and Miami Township history.  We are in the process of working out details to share the booth with the Baum Opera House – watch the Tavern Log to see if this comes about in 2008.

The HRRC consists of many dedicated positive thinking volunteers.  Their enthusiasm and ability to achieve goals, on their own or as a group, keeps this committee going at “full-steam ahead”.

“Thanks a Bunch” to all the terrific HRRC volunteers!

Nita Petticrew, Chairperson
